At the age of 18 he did an apprenticeship as compositor before went to university in Essen. Hans studied in four different cities Essen, Wuppertal, Basel and finished in London. His first professional experience was in 1987 in Amsterdam at BRS maatschap van vormgevers bv and Total Design bv.
